Illustrated books -Kat Godeu- The Battle of the Trees from the Book of Taliesin and Math fab Mathonwy

“I am an artist and illustrator, my studio is in Nantlle, Snowdonia. I have been a professional graphic artist for almost 40 years, I exhibit my work internationally and have written five books on Illustration published by Bloomsbury. I have led degree courses in Illustration and Graphic Design at Art Schools around the UK including Camberwell College of Arts and Salford University.

I am inspired by the sense of place, landscape, history and the deep time of myths and legends of Snowdonia and have recently illustrated the enigmatic poem Cad Goddeu- (The Battle of the Trees) from the 14th Century Book of Taliesin. In which enchanter Gwydion brings the trees and plants of the ancient forest to life to battle Arawn Lord of the Otherworld of Annwn. My book Kat Godeu is my personal interpretation of the symbolism of the poem, it contains 86 pages of illustrations and hand drawn text in Middle Welsh from studying the images of the manuscript in the National Library of Wales. The book incorporates drawings from my imagination with observational pen and ink drawings of the trees, plants, lakes, streams and mountains that surround me in Snowdonia.

I am also in the process of illustrating Math fab Mathonwy (The Fourth Branch of The Mabinogi) which is set in Nantlle and other locations in Gwynedd and like Cad Goddeu features the legendary enchanter, warrior and trickster Gwydion fab Don.
